Free Plans For Bluebird House

Bluebird houses are a great way to attract these beautiful birds to your yard. They are also a fun and easy project to build. Here are some free plans for a bluebird house that you can download and use to build your own.

Materials

  • 1x6 pine boards (16 feet)
  • 1x4 pine boards (8 feet)
  • 1/2-inch plywood (24 inches x 24 inches)
  • 1-1/4 inch wood screws
  • 1-1/2 inch wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Primer
  • Paint

Tools

  • Circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Countersink bit
  • Hammer
  • Nail gun
  • Level
  • Clamps
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

  1. Cut the 1x6 pine boards to the following lengths:
    • 4 pieces at 12 inches
    • 2 pieces at 8 inches
    • 2 pieces at 6 inches
  2. Cut the 1x4 pine boards to the following lengths:
    • 2 pieces at 18 inches
    • 2 pieces at 12 inches
    • 2 pieces at 6 inches
  3. Cut the 1/2-inch plywood to a size of 6 inches x 6 inches.
  4. Assemble the front and back panels of the house by attaching the 1x6 pine boards to the 1x4 pine boards with 1-1/4 inch wood screws. Make sure to countersink the screws so that they are flush with the surface of the wood.
  5. Assemble the sides of the house by attaching the 1x6 pine boards to the 1x4 pine boards with 1-1/4 inch wood screws. Again, make sure to countersink the screws.
  6. Attach the front and back panels to the sides of the house with 1-1/2 inch wood screws. Make sure to align the edges of the boards flush.
  7. Attach the plywood floor to the bottom of the house with 1-1/4 inch wood screws. Make sure to countersink the screws.
  8. Attach the roof to the top of the house with 1-1/2 inch wood screws. Make sure to align the edges of the boards flush.
  9. Drill a 1-1/2 inch hole in the front of the house, about 1 inch from the top. This will be the entrance hole for the bluebirds.
  10. Prime and paint the house. Make sure to use a paint that is safe for birds.
  11. Mount the house on a post or tree at a height of 5-6 feet. Make sure the house is facing south or east.

Tips

  • You can add a perch to the front of the house by attaching a small piece of wood to the bottom of the entrance hole.
  • You can also add a predator guard to the house by attaching a piece of wire mesh around the bottom of the house.
  • Be sure to clean the house out every year to remove any nesting material or debris.
With a little time and effort, you can build a beautiful bluebird house that will provide a safe and comfortable home for these beautiful birds.
